For i s o l, Matthew Thomas will contribute a piece which explores the sound world of Air Traffic Control (ATC) communications from the perspective of the flightdeck. This radio environment supports communications which utilise a complex standard phraseology, embedded within a strictly disciplined procedural language. Furthermore, given the technologies involved, the ATC radio environment is rich in various types of electronic interference and noise. Raw sound footage is recorded during flight, by positioning a portable minidisc recorder with direct line-in input from the aircraft's radio equipment.
